In Random Access, Nam June Paik uses a magnetic tape installation to expose the vast amount of sounds that can be made using a detached tape head. The interaction with the viewer is the critical part of the installation.
The goal of my experiment is to recreate a similiar device using the same idea but with more modern electronics (that being cassette tape and a magnetic cassette tape head). The purpose of Nam June Paik's device was to influence the viewer to participate in composing random sound. The purpose of my machine is to build a practical musical instrument that can be used with recording equipment or amplification. I will be documenting it with photographs, and if it is successful, videotaping the end result. The outcome will be essentially the same but will be used in a more practical environment.
