The World Wide Web (WWW)
- In the early 1980s the Net was opened up to University use. It was during this stage that World Wide Web technology was first developed. The goal was to have this information made available in an attractive, interactive and relatively easy-to-use database format.
- Its developers achieved it's goal (by 1991) by not using complicated computer language, the user just had to use plain text to enter commands. This is when the Internet became global, through the WWW.
- Information may be in the form of text, audio, video, or animation.
- Many millions of sites containing documents with links to other documents, supplied through servers.
- Fastest growing area of the Internet.
- The
WWW is the "Information Superhighway" as Al Gore coined the phrase in 1993.
