Oogie Boogie is based off of the Bogeyman, a mythical creature used to scare kids into making them behave. The character Oogie Boogie was not in the original poem, but they later added him in as the main antagonist of the movie. The character is loosely inspired by Cab Calloway from the 1932 Betty Boop cartoon.
In an alternate version, Oogie Boogie wasn't an actual creature. Oogie Boogie was actually going to be Dr. Finkelstein in dieguise to get revenge on Jack and Sally. They later scrapped that idea and stuck with Oogie being his own creature and not a mutant duck in disguise.
